Family-Friendly Campgrounds near Fort McMurray

Camp store and shower building at Gregoire Lake Provincial Park near Fort McMurray.

From forest, to big machines, to incredible history, Fort McMurray is one of my favourite hidden gem destinations in Alberta! Located in the depth of the boreal forest, there are amazing opportunities to get outdoors.

As an outdoor family we love to camp. And being somewhat cheap, now that we own the equipment, I’m not paying for a hotel! You’re surrounded by crown land in Fort McMurray, so camping there is always an option, but if you’re looking for a few more amenities, here are the family-friendly campgrounds in the area.

Land Acknowledgement

This land has welcomed First Nations from across Turtle Island, and settlers and visitors from around the world. Alberta lands are part of Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10, and the homeland of the Métis.

Alberta Mamas respects and celebrates the sovereignty, lands, histories, languages, knowledge systems and cultures of all Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit nations. We are striving to better listen, understand, and learn from the Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.

We are all Treaty people.

The Campground Selection Process

The requirements I used to filter this list included:

  • within a reasonable driving distance of the town, and
  • appropriate for a family visit.

You won’t find campgrounds that focus on permanent sites, or have age requirements.

Note that Fort McMurray has a high cost of living, and many transient workers. Campground in the area often have longer term tenants. Watch for campgrounds with monthly rates if this is a concern for you.

Please Note: We do our best to keep the information Alberta Mamas current and accurate, but all information shared is subject to change. Please check the website and/or social media for the organizations directly (we always try to link to them!) to confirm before travelling.

Excluded Campgrounds

In my search for ALL THE CAMPGROUNDs, I often come across ones that don’t make my list for various reasons. Here are a few excluded and why:

  • Tower Road Campground and Rotary Park are permanently closed.
  • Maqua Lake Provincial Park only offers group camping.
  • Christina Lake Lodge is 2 hours from Fort McMurray.
  • Camp Yogi is a retreat/meeting facility on Gregoire Lake.
  • Golden Eagle RV park has almost zero information online.
  • Lewyk Park is monthly, and requires trailers to be no more than 10 years old.
  • Surmont Creek Campground targets the mobile workforce.
